Mute Swan
Cygnus olor
52.9002, -1.23521
Field Notes
Description:
Largest flying bird in Britain. The adult is all white and the juvenile is grey-brown. Distinguishable from Bewick and Whooper swans by the orange bill with a black bulb at its base. The bulb is smaller in the female.
Habitat:
Live on most still or slow moving waterways such as lakes and rivers. It is found across Northern and Western Europe. Resident in Britain all year round.
Notes:
One of my favourite shots. I saw the swan in the foreground was on a path that would cross the swan in the background. I focused on the closer swan and waited patiently for it to cross the line of sight I desired. I still thank my lucky stars today that the two looked toward one another as I pressed the shutter.
