No, I never see them as grubs unless I dig them up, but I find plenty when digging (which is why one of my duck peers intently into any hole I'm digging - mmmm, big juicy larvae).

Thanks, it certainly does. I'll try to find out. I just consulted a DPI brochure on line that says they never come above ground. I found this one crawling on the surface as per my photo.

Looks like the grub of the red-headed cockchaffer beetle: we just had a huge hatching of the beetles here, and it's not hard to imagine that they are in Indonesia as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_headed_cockchafer
