Description:

tall spikes of pink-purple flowers. Similar to fireweed but with many more blossoms packing the spike.

Habitat:

Vanport area of the Columbia River basin, open roadside, cottonwoods.

So that's the infamous purple loosestrife! It wasn't taking over by any means, was quite out-competed by the grasses, etc., and was really an attractive plant. And it was closer to the uphill road than the water. I grow yellow loosestrife in my garden, and it does pretty well but dies out after a few years in a particular spot. Maybe the purple does, too.
