Hmm.. I'm not sure. This particular species is found in all eastern states, including Maine. I'm not aware of a subspecies. They were probably just in a different life stage than this one... they go through so many changes in their lives. Did you catch them in water or on land?
i used to catch some that looked like these as a kid up in maine but the spots were just brown rings without the red they were abut 2-4 inches long maybe just a northern variety?
