Field Notes

Description:

Settled on the buddleia next to our veranda and kept moving without displaying its nice tan back. Family Brush-foots, Nymphalidae Subfamily: Emperors, Apaturinae. Wingspan: 5.1 - 6.6cm 2.0 to 2.6inch. Above: Amber brown with dark markings and borders; forewing bears small white spots near apex with single submarginal black eyespot; hindwing has postmedian dark spot row. Below: As above but muted coloration; hindwing has postmedian row of yellow- rimmed spots with blue/green centers. Host plant: Hackberry and Sugerberry.

Habitat:

Moist woodland forest margins stream and gardens.

Thanks Karen - we have Hackberry bushes at the back of our garden.
Great spot! We have loads of Hackberry emperors but i have never seen one take nectar - they seem to mainly feed from tree sap around here.
