This is some type of Liatris, commonly called Blazing Star. I suggested L. aspera above, but it could also be Meadow Blazing Star, L. ligulistylis. I am less familiar with these northern species - hopefully someone from your area with wildflower expertise can chime in to help out!
Looks like a type of Vernonia. Common name Ironweed.
