Description:

A speckled-eye hoverfly; Eristalinus sp. of Syrphidae.

Habitat:

Spotted in large semi-urban yard/garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

yes, your new photos are better :D I also did another googling for this beauty a few days ago. I saw some similarities with Eristalinus sepulchralis when I searched for 'fly with speckled eyes' but did not find an exact match. You'll find it eventually. Good luck in your search.
IanMichaelIleto Thanks for your suggestion of genus Helophilus. I wanted to go with that based on strong visual similarities however so far I cannot find the genus listed for New Guinea...
