Description:

One of 3 slender rice bugs (Leptocorisa sp.) that collectively inhabit Australia, Bhutan, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia (including New Guinea), Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, and Vietnam. Both the adults and nymphs feed on grains at the milking stage. They are a serious pest of rice and can reduce yield by as much as 30%. The primary hosts of the rice bug are rice and Echinochloa sp. http://www.cbit.uq.edu.au/software/riceipm/keys/Html/Leptocorisa%20slen…

Habitat:

Spotted along edge of a playing field of a large campus. Situated at the base of mountain, surrounded by settlements, food gardens and disturbed forest.

Notes:

Looks similar to this unidentified species from the Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Alydidae: http://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20orders/Hemiptera/Heteroptera/unide…

It does indeed look like a type of assassin bug but I believe my 2nd photo is a dead ringer for the specimen in the link I posted under "description" that identifies it (only, unfortunately) to the family Alydidae.
