Field Notes

Description:

Smooth-edged leaves, green/purple stem, small flowers that give way to dark purple berries (those on this plant have not yet ripened). This particular plant is quite small, but there is another in my yard that has grown well over 6 feet tall.

Habitat:

My yard and garden

Notes:

The bird seem to enjoy the berries. The only other place I can remember seeing this plant was at a museum of Appalachia in Tennessee, where it was planted in a garden.

Thanks to annorion for the ID!
