Field Notes

Description:

A native prairie plant about 4 or 5 feet tall with trademark round spiky flowers.

Habitat:

Midwest and Southeast US

Notes:

Re the name... It's not that it was hard for a rattlesnake to swallow—though it sure looks like it would be—but that the root was used by Indians as an antidote for the snake's venom
