Field Notes

Description:

Black Bear caught stealing bird seed from a metal container in the back yard. Height 40"; Length 5'; T 4". male much larger than a female. Black, long-haired; often has a white patch on chest. Head round; muzzle long, brownish; ears short. Bears in Vermont have evolved to be non-aggressive and are very timid - unless protecting their cubs and most likely to flee or slap the human (just like they would do to punish their own cubs).

Habitat:

Woods, swamps, dumps. Mainly nocturnal; semi hibernates.

Notes:

Range: nw CT; MA; VT; c and n NH; ME.

We removed the bird seed. The snow melted within the next day and it is sunny and warm today.
