Field Notes

Description:

The smallest species of penguin, which usually grows to between 30 and 33 cm tall (12 to 13 inches).

Habitat:

Found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand, with possible records from Chile.

Notes:

There is a penguin rookery on the neck between the north and south islands.

You could put this under the Signs of Wildlife mission.
The penguins here only come onshore after dusk, to go into their burrows , and they leave again before dawn. I've watched them at night using a red spotlight, but I couldn't get a photo without using a flash, and that seemed unkind. So this was my record.
