Field Notes

Description:

Dark brown to black Polypore. The isolated fruit body some 15 cm large, mainly black above, becoming lighter in coloring towards edges, some red brown semi-circles on edges; white - whitish underside.
Smaller ones, growing on lower strata, grow in cluster of 4 visible ones, larger some 4 cm large.

Habitat:

Forest floor, growing on fallen birch tree trunk. Montane environment, slopes of Jura mountain range.
