Double Crested Cormorant
Phalecrocorax Auritus
41.2939, -72.3825
Field Notes
Description:
Big dark water bird, with a long neck. It has a medium sized bill with a blunt or hooked tip. This one had a hooked tip. I guess they are in abundance, but this is the first time I've seen one up close. I read that they are being blamed for declines in sport fisheries, and for devastating fish farms.
Habitat:
Along the East Coast beaches. This one I spotted on a pier in Old Saybrook, Ct.
Notes:
I thought he was a rare bird, but I guess not. I think he's a bit prehistoric looking, in a cute way.
