Field Notes

Description:

The attractive flower of this tree belies the fact that its fruit and leaves are extremely poisonous. Reportedly children from time to time mistake the fruit for a mango (hence the name; see 3rd photo) with tragic results. In fact, another species of the genus (C. odollam) is called the "suicide tree".

Habitat:

This specimen observed on ocean beach.

Notes:

For a spotting of another member of this genus see http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7783545
