Field Notes

Description:

Small, with rapid movements, rarely perches, feeding on the wing from flowers. Grey/white underneath, emerald green on back and wings. Male has red/white throat. Beak is long and narrow about 2 inches long. Tail is somewhat shorter in comparison to the beak, squared. In flight a distinct humming or deep buzzing sound is heard. A pleasant rolling chirp is made when about to begin feeding. The birds are initially shy, and reclusive, however, in time, will move near when danger appears to be abated.

Habitat:

Open woodland meadow, where there are an abundance of wildflowers.

Notes:

This pair has aggressively fed on a stand of Jewel-weed (Impatiens) for quite some time.
