Dark-eyed Junco
Junco hyemalis
41.24, -95.93
Field Notes
Description:
These little ground birds are small (5½”/14 cm). The males are a dark gray to black except for a white underside and white/pink bill. The outer tail feathers on each side are white so they have a very distinguishing white “V” when they fly (foto #3).
Habitat:
Photographed near a tree line at the edge of our yard in eastern Nebraska, USA (330 masl).
Notes:
These are our “winter indicators.” When they come we know winter is here, no matter what the calendar says. They are fun to watch all winter long.
