Eastern gray squirrel
Sciurus carolinensis
40.6084, -75.4902
Field Notes
Description:
The Eastern gray squirrel isn't actually gray but a mix of browns, blacks and whites. The squirrels eat wild tree nuts (acorns mostly in our area) but are fond of birdseed and corn as well.
Habitat:
Native to the Eastern United States, the eastern gray squirrel prefers tree dens but will gather large collections of leaves in high tree branches if a den is not available.
Notes:
When I heard the familiar chatter as I was doing dishes, I ran for the camera. I was very happy to see that our usual visitors to the backyard bird feeders were okay after Hurricane Irene battered us a bit.
