Field Notes

Description:

A large barrel cactus that can reach 6.6 ft in height. Aka Miner's compass. I found about 6 specimens while at the park. This one was about 20 inches in Height. They have long red spines that turn grey with age. They also have a tendency to lean towards the southwest. They are actually orienting themselves towards the noonday sun to protect themselves from the heat, hence the Miner's Compass name.

Habitat:

Spotted at Joshua Tree National Park. Desert scrub habitat.

Thank you, Mauna. I was only there for a day but I already want to go back. There is so much to explore there.
Thank you Ava. They definitely gave the desert some color and character.
Beautiful pictures and cool notes!
