Butterfly Weed Seed
Asclepias tuberosa
33.7748, -84.2963
Field Notes
Description:
The fuzzy white part of the seed is an awesome seed dispersant. It attaches to dog fur (an other furred animals) by wrapping the white threads around the Fur. It is not sticky like glue but it does attach well. Also, it blows in the wind and carries the seed with it. Another adaptation is that all of the seeds are not ready to be dispersed at once...giving the seed a bit more chance to happen upon ideal growing conditions over time. Because these seeds look like a lot of bugs, seed-eating birds might be attracted to these seeds because they look like bugs crawling when the wind blows.
