Description:

Unidentified planthopper egg mass.

Habitat:

Spotted on a taro (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) leaf in a large semi-urban yard & garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Yes, I wonder. Those reasons or perhaps to protect against desiccation?
The mother has gone to some effort to produce the waxy layer surrounding the eggs. I wonder if there is some protective function such as deterring attack from snails or some other predator?
