Mixed boreal forest, this area is a primarily an old birch forest, lots of post mature trees.

@raulalsc, what you have is an "Acorn wood pecker" and what Bill has is a "Hairy Wood Pecker". They are different species and hence you may not be able to use the same criteria for differentiating between male and female!
This bird looks a little like a Downy's woodpecker.very cute.
She´s a female ! and I have a male woodpecker http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5180041 look at the position of the red spot
