Field Notes

Description:

Family: Cardinalidae, Order: Passeriformes, Class: Aves, Phylum: Chordata The male Northern Cardinal is a larger bright red songbird with a thick bill, long tail and prominent crest. It has a black face immediately around its reddish bill. The females are pale brown with reddish tinges around the wings, tail and crest.

Habitat:

Northern Cardinals live in inhabited areas such as backyards, parks, woodlots, and shrubby forest edges. I found this one in the trees on the river walk by Timber Ridge Middle School.

Notes:

Cardinals eat seeds, grains, fruits and insects. Cardinals usually raise two broods of four eggs each a year. They don't migrate and both the male and females sing
