After Lee dumped a weekend of rain I caught these guys partying in a flooded pasture that developed some nice ponds. They seemed to be enjoying the water. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7211053 Across the whole field there were probably a couple hundred. First time I had seen so many in that spot, usually only a couple. Guess their duck sense told them their was a new pond to play in! ;)
Very possible they are passing through. I typically see them in fresh water areas and I've always had better luck in the mornings and sometimes evenings. Yes, there is a pond like area that is part of a drainage canal at the end of my street. There is a patch of woods across the canal from my street. On one side the canal runs through sugarcane fields and on the other through some apartments.
I never see many ducks!! The weather is changing and all the animals seem to be more active!! Also I think some fly through this area on the way to South America, but I have never seen these ducks in the area. I was shocked to see them today. And I couldn't believe they had ducklings.
I was out earlier than usual, I am usually shooting photos in the afternoons. So maybe that why I never saw these ducks. But your ducks do they live on the banks of a pond like these?
Not sure if they are migratory this far south. They have a pair that have been breeding in the back of my neighborhood for a couple years now but I always see them. So far they have had about a dozen babies a year although I only ever see the pair after the babies are gone.
Only 2, but I never saw them before. I think they've been hiding. The ducklings look so young!! I wonder if they were migrating and then had the ducklings?
nice shots of the younger ones. I have a couple of spottings of ones a little younger than that (still just black and yellow) and another of ones a little older but don't have their colors yet.
