Field Notes

Description:

The behavior of this Southern Black Racer is unusual. I am used to them fleeing into underbrush as soon as possible whenever spotted. This one "stood" its ground even though it was in no way cornered. I guess I was worth keeping on eye on, but to worth the effort to escape.

Habitat:

Pinelands, hardwood hammocks, prairies, sandhills, scrub, and cypress strands.

Notes:

The Southern Black Racer is a non-venomous snake.
