No, you wouldn't think so! I was surprised that it was a tobacco plant, as well (although the flowers do resemble some of those from the tobacco family.) You are very welcome!! I love solving a mystery....
I would've never thought this plant to be poisonous especially since it's located at a very busy park. Thank you!
I found the information in one of my books called: "Wildflowers of the Santa Monica Mountains" by: Milt McAuley. I am originally from Ventura County so I had this book handy! This is considered a poisonous species and it was introduded from South America in the late 1800's and has spread easily. It especially likes areas that have been bulldozed for firebreaks, or along roads, trails and abandoned building sites-so anywhere that the soil has been upturned. Definitely a beautiful plant, though!
