Field Notes

Description:

Strangler Fig Trees start out growing in the branches of another tree as an epiphyte, sending down vines to the ground. The vines grow and "strangle" the life out of the host tree, until the host tree dies and the Strangler Fig Tree is left in its place.

Notes:

This photo was taken looking up into the space where the original host tree had been. The Strangler Fig Tree grew around it, eventually taking the place of the original tree, leaving a hollow space inside after the first tree rotted away.
