Description:

The butterfly was spotted flying over garlic blossoms. It had a very lovely eye like pattern on the tail, on little outgrowths of the wings.

You might be right Ceherzog. I was thinking the other way...The colors were to attract the male counterpart (if so, then it has to be a female).
Pretty scary looking. I think the rear eye spots are to fool predators into biting off a piece of wing rather than getting the head and killing the butterfly. This one might be a scare tactic. Very interesting spotting.
