Description:

flowers growing directly from the trunk of the tree - so unusual! deep pink with long streamers protruding around the petals.

Habitat:

In the tropical rainforest of the Napo River several hours' boatride south of Coca. Amazonia.

Oops. Found a longer list here. http://www.theplantlist.org/browse/A/Malvaceae/Herrania/ So maybe leaving it to the genus was better.

Okay now I found the right photos! Here is one just like mine: http://b-and-t-world-seeds.com/52115.jpg but I will have to leave it at the genus stage as I really don't know any more about my spotting. It was on a trail we were following while birding and I did a quick snap of it as had never seen it before. Thanks, Machi!

So far the Herrania sp I have looked at have white flowers but I am still looking! anyone want to help on this one?

Please confirm ID, I am not 100% sure that the genus is the only one that looks like this. Beautiful plant and photo. It is called cauliflory when a plant such as this one has flowers growing right out of the trunk or main branches.

Thanks! I was pretty amazed by all the living things there that I had never encountered before. I had prepared by studying some of the bird IDs ahead, but the plants were something else!
