Where we camped was along the Rio Chagres. I was up early exploring along the river when the early morning sun caught my eye shinning through this flower. needsless to say it was spectacular. It's nice to be able to call it by name now.
The flowers are cauliflorous, belonging to the tree. This is not an epiphyte or endophytic parasite. Here is another link to Brownea macrophylla: http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Brownea_macrophylla
At a glance it looks like a blood lily sprouting from a tree trunk.
is this an epiphyte or is the tree cauliflorous (flowers grow from the trunk)?
Very cool! I've been in plenty of jungles but never seen anything like this.
