Field Notes

Description:

Also called "Mt. Diablo Fairy Lantern" a native here in Northern California of the lily family. They grow on moderately sunny rises near the edges of redwood groves. Small but the bright yellow color seems to "glow" thus making them very easy to spot. They actually DO resemble little Chinese lanterns (I guess the fairies think so, too! :o) ) What's maybe not so apparent in the photos are the curious "fringed" petals -- resembling more than anything unraveled cloth!

Habitat:

Moderately sunny rises near edges of redwood groves.

Notes:

I have always had a "thing" against yellow flowers for some reason (although I go ga-ga over black and green flowers - yes, some say I'm quite strange ;o) ) -- I guess yellow NOT being my favoritest of colors! In my quarter century in the retail and wholesale nursery business, some of my co-workers used to tease me by telling me they had visions of me "stomping on all the little yellow flowers of the world" LOL! But I just adore THESE yellow flowers!
