Field Notes

Description:

Caterpillar of a species of sawfly. These were consuming the leaves of a rose plant. Quite a nice contrast of yellow and blue markings.

Habitat:

Rose plants.

Notes:

These sawfly larvae did quite a bit of damage to the rose plant but did not destroy it (yet). The larvae were fed to a large female toad (Bufo americanus), but were interestingly refused by some pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus).
