Field Notes

Description:

Family: Cytinaceae

The Cytinaceae contain the genus Cytinus which is a low parasitic perennial with no chlorophyll. The parasite lives in the host plant, the scales are usually crimson and white or pale-pink flowers appear in April or May. Cytinus hypocistus subsp. clusii is parasitic on pink-flowered Cistus species. The plants nestle on the ground beneath shrubs and can be difficult to find.

Cytinus was formerly included in the Rafflesia Family, Rafflesiaceae, a primarily tropical family of parasitic plants which contained the largest flower in the world, Rafflesia.

Thank you! Your comments helped me a lot =)
I think you nailed it Wombat, nice work! That species was actually formerly in the Rafflesia family, very interesting.
Yes, create that event! I'm really curious too. Parasitic blooms are some of my favorites. I've spotted 9 species so far that I've uploaded. Search for Rafflesia, snowplant and coralroot under Organisms for other examples. I'm not sure what's found in Europe.
Could it be this? http://www.flickriver.com/photos/jennyn/2418166469/
Ah okay =) I'll go by the spot where I saw these ones next year (I'll have to create an event in iCal to remind me =) ). I'm really curious now =D
Okay, I do think its a flower, just a parasitic one. I see you spotted it in the spring. Maybe take a look for it in your mother's garden next year.
Hi dandoucette, no I haven't seen it since that day, but I don't go out much to the place where I saw this. I thought it was a flower because my mother has one that emerges from the ground like these ones...
I think this is some type of parasite. Have you seen any more of it emerge from the ground?
