Description:
Small passerine bird, 12 to 15 cm of total length, from Sittidae family. Grey overall appearance, and easily recognized by big head, (almost) neckless body and long pointed bill, and the black mask. Ssp caesia has a rusty-buff breast and belly.
Habitat:
Seen on feeders in our residence gardens, in winter. The Eurasian nuthatch eats mainly insects, particularly caterpillars and beetles, although in autumn and winter its diet is supplemented with nuts and seeds.
We live in urban, or rather semi-urban setting around Geneva; and our region is quite wooded and close to nature and flanks of Jura mountain range and its Natural Reserve.
