Description:

3/4 inch long

Habitat:

spotted on sword fern in back yard

Notes:

(the closet visual match I can find is the Australian gum tree shield bug, but can't find a reference to it's introduction to Florida)

I hadn't thought of the sexual differences. Here's another spotting of what appears to be the same bug: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5724140. This one however has three distinct dots at the top of the shield. And you're not "completely" wrong, they are both shield bugs. Thanks again.
Yes, I figured that, too, auntnance - probably male and female differences? It's not only the legs, btw. Its also the edge of the backshield. The one of the forest bug is segmented in a change of black and white - your spotting seems to have thorny segments. You're right to take my suggestion just as a direction...maybe I am completely wrong.
Agreed, Lars it is very similar, but it doesn't have the white leg segments and feet. I will keep it in mind (after all "worldwide" certainly covers Florida). Thanks.
