Field Notes

Description:

A bracket fungus with a cosmopolitan distribution.

Notes:

Found several of these fan fungus with a striking white edge growing on a dead anonas (Annona reticulata) tree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custard-apple. Sizes ranged from 3 to 8 inches. Viewed from the side (third photo) the underside is all white.

I could not find a similar photo but it is probably Ganoderma applanatum var. philippinense. See the reference links.

very common in South California...a plant killer...
Congrats! Hindi sa pagkabasak ha pero sa pagkakaroon ng pangalan.
Now I have a name! Thanks for the suggestion EricEllison, I'll look into it.
@alice and nath: Binagsak ko unang Bio class ko... wag mong pagkalat ^_^ I've seen several similar spotting but not quite, and all of them are from different countries so i'm not sure...
Hehe...Naalala ko kase sa Bio 12 na kapag may ganyang itsura, tenga ng daga ilalagay ko. Kahit mali! I'm sooo bad in taxonomy during those days (I guess until now).
Hahaha at 8 inches (1st pic) I don't think so ^_^ The 'tenga ng daga' I know and love to eat is Auricularia polytricha http://gardencore.blogspot.com/2009/08/tenga-ng-daga-auricularia-polytricha.html
