Field Notes

Description:

Thanks for the ID help.! Young Red Tailed Hawk! As long as he/she hangs out I will keep updating photos.

Habitat:

Alpine Forest, Elevation 8505 ft. 1 mile NE of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Our home is perched on a steep hill on stilts, the deck level is a few feet below the top of the forest canopy. This old growth pine is a favorite for birds of prey.....it over looks my feeders!

Notes:

Young bird, been hanging around for a month or so, beautiful bird but my dove population is smaller this year. Still Here Jan. 2012 Hopefully will be a fixture around here (Even if it would be classified as a "Noisy Neighbor").

Stunning shots! Welcome to Project Noah 2ndnatco - I look forward to seeing more from you!
Also, the only way to tell if it's a male or female for sure is to do an internal examination...or wait until "she" lays an egg! The coloration is the same for males and females, but you can guess at the sex by the size of the bird. Males are usually smaller than the females, but there can be large males and small females.
I love the 3rd photo as well...great timing!! Sounds like lunch is pretty easy for him!
I think you should edit this spotting and click and drag the third picture to the #1 spot; it's very dramatic.
Thanks! Will Join, This one is still around, dense forest in valley below the house, good shelter....and a buffet, there is a large wetland below the forest. Thanks again for the Id!
Great shot!! You've got yourself a Red-Tailed hawk!! It's a juvenile, so no red tail yet, but beautiful!! I've created a new "Raptors of Colorado" mission - would love you to join! Here's the link: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627557
