Field Notes

Description:

The gas filled bladder of the bull kelp contains up to 10 percent carbon monoxide, helps give the seaweed buoyancy. The stipe was about 8 meters long (pic2). Several tangled together in pic3 a common occurrence in the winter here.

Habitat:

Spotted along the beach at the North Jetty at Ocean Shores, Wa.
