Description:
An unidentified species of banana stalk fly. (Neriidae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neriidae ). These flies have long legs, and are saprophagous. They congregate around rotting vegetation or damaged tree trunks (e.g. papaya)...and banana stalks. Eggs are laid in rotting vegetable matter, bark or fruit.
Habitat:
This specimen is on a corn/maize plant in a large semi-urban yard/garden adjacent to a disturbed remnant patch of forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.
