Field Notes

Habitat:

sand dunes. closest object was grass 3' away. closest tree was a live oak about 15' away. Jockey's Ridge State Park.

Notes:

I found a couple more pictures of another specimen that was nearby. Probably not too helpful as they don't show the underside, but I thought I'd post them anyway.

I found a list of fungus identified in the park. Laccaria trullisata was on the list, so I'm going with it. Thanks for the ID help Mark Ridgway and Tom15.
Sorry I don't have any more pictures. It was in pure sand - surprised me. Cap was around 4" in diameter.
We need to see how those gills are connected to the stipe to be sure.
Yours is a good candidate too Tom. Inrolled margin maybe thin but it's a sand-dune specialist on the east coast !!
Thanks for agreement Tom. I think it's just a matter of which one. I've found some in sandy soils but not pure sand as this appears to be. So many to choose from in USA.
Mark, I think you got it with Lactarius.
Amazing in pure sand. Sure looks like Lactarius (milkcaps). Closest object might be straight below !? :-)
Check out this species and see if you think that's it. Nice spotting!
