Field Notes

Description:

This is a small treefrog. Color varies somewhat but is usually gray or green as they are able to shift color somewhat to camouflage themselves to their background. The underside of the hind leg is orange to yellow. This particular individual may be either a gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) or its related cousin the Cope's Tree Frog (Hyla chrysoscelis). In the field the best way to determine which is by their calls, but this individual was photographed out of its mating season. Also, females have whitish throats, so this may be a non-vocal female.

Habitat:

Forests in eastern United States and Canada.
