Field Notes

Notes:

Perfectly camouflaged against the bark of a dark tree with its wings closed, the Mourning Cloak will flap suddenly into flight at the approach of a predator and show its rich colours on the upperside. Wow! It was so beautiful and I am glad that it stopped in the sun so that we could see that rich maroon upperside, with the creamy outer band and the blue spots. Gorgeous!
