Field Notes

Description:

Large color differences between males and females. The pictured male has blue wings (when seen fromt the top) while the female's are rufous. The female's tail has much less black in it.

Habitat:

Almost anywhere in the U.S. I usually see these birds hovering above fields to spot mice and voles, which is exactly what the bird in the photo is doing.

Notes:

I was shooting at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, driving on the refuge road and heading back toward the main parking area, when I saw this Kestrel hover over the adjacent field just off the edge of the gravel parking lot. I quickly parked, grabbed the camera, jumped out of the truck, and got a few quick bursts off. This is one of the resulting frames.
