Field Notes

Description:

I thought this was mountain cranberry but I'm unsure; it seems like the plants grow together in clusters and the berry appears to be on the top of each stalk. Growing in mixed woods with many hemlock, white pines, oaks, maple and hickory. Each berry has two hole like opening on top of it; the insides are white and starchy looking with multiple tannish looking seeds. The berries are the size of small blueberries. The plant itself it short and doesn't really grow to far off the ground.

Comments (1)

This plant has a lot of common names - squaw vine, twin flower, two-eyed berry - but partridge berry, or partridgeberry is the most frequently reported name. An interesting feature of the plant is that the berry is formed from the fused ovaries of two, connected flowers.
