Field Notes

Description:

Multi-colored spider. Has purple, orange-yellowish strips on its legs, beige body, crown shaped purplish black and red dotted bottom, has 8 legs in groups of two, and has two 1/2" fangs.

Habitat:

Found in the tropics of Costa Rica. lowland area close to the beach.

Notes:

One morning while I was taking pictures of butterflies landing on the flowers outside my friend's home, I came within a few inches of walking into this spiders web. Luckily it was at face height and was able to see it before this happened. Someone I showed the picture to said these spiders are not venomous, but I forgot to ask her what was the species name.

Thank you, Atul, but what is the common name and what is the scientific name? Sorry still unsure.
its an Argiope, signature Spider
Is Golden Silk Orb Weaver the common name? Then it is either a Genus Nephila or an Argiope argentata? I think it is a Golden Silk Orb Weaver from the Argiope argentata family. If anyone knows please let me know. Thank you.
