Description:

A very beautiful spider...it had a very different eye pattern...note the four eyes around which there are 2 brownish orange triangles..also there is one eye at each end just above chelicerae....i found it in its nest which was a wrapped dry leaf with carcasses of insects and one spider....need help with identity!

Brilliant Emilie!!Everything you described was just perfect....it is stegodyphus indeed.....the cocoon was very well made..its rainy season here..so maybe the cocoon was made to protect itself...

Very nice portrait, but the rest of the spider is invisible, and you did not tell us how big it was. Judging from the position of the eyes, it seems to be a member of the Eresidae family, a female watching over its cocoon of eggs or youngsters. These cocoons are usually hidden in the ground, under leaves etc and covered with grains of soil and carcasses of prey (insects and other spiders). There are several species in India, mostly of the genus Stegodyphus. They mesure about 20 mm.
