Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized frog, males 27-38mm, and females a little bigger at 29-42mm (SV length). Light brown dorsal surface, pale on the ventral. A light cream coloured dorsal line running the length of its body, joins with a lateral one running across the posterior of its hind legs. Pads on the forlegs larger than those on the hind legs and a small pointed tubercle above each eye.

Habitat:

Endemic to New Guinea both on the Indonesian and PNG sides. Tropical rain forest hiding in leaf litter by day and climbs into low foliage to call at night. This one seen on the large low leaves at night in pouring rain.

Notes:

This species is a direct development breeder and the male carries the developing tadpoles on his back.

Thank you Polilla. Was very pleased to find this species. I believe Tabubil and it's immediate surrounds is one of the wettest areas in PNG. It certainly was when I was there :)
