Field Notes

Description:

possibly an immature White Tailed Eagle. not sure. notice the white tail feathers with brown rims. but the head and back feathers are much lighter than the photo on Wiki for the Norwegian bird.

Habitat:

also at Akan International Crane Center.

Notes:

not completely sure which bird of prey this is. there are several kinds flying around during feeding.

thx to Gordon Dietzman for a most likely answer~

In Norway it's called Sea Eagle.. It looks like an young sea eagle. The adult bird are darker brown and the beak are yellow it looks like that here in Norway
That first shot is amazing! I love it. :D A great capture, well done!
ya, it could be. i'm going by the white tail feathers with brown rims and so far i couldn't come up with any other species like this.
It might very well be an immature white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_Eagle for more information. The Wikipedia page doesn't specifically include Hokkaido, Japan within its range, but other sources, such as http://www.jstor.org/pss/1369109, does.
Its alike Golden Eagle...(Aquila chrysaetos canadensis)
Wow, I didn't notice the fish piece at first. Thanks for the background and, again, awesome photo!
if you notice the bottom right, they are fighting for fish pieces thrown into the fray by the tenders at the center. they make a big show flapping wings but rarely any bird gets hurt. it definitely makes for great photo ops~
What an action shot! Any more details as to what led up to this? Thanks for sharing!
