Description:

probably the most beautiful insect that's indigenous to Hong Kong. i think it's also a species of lantern bug, but AFAIK there is no official name for this subspecies. transliterated from Cantonese it's called "Longan Chicken". no idea where the 'chicken' comes from but it does like the tree sap from Longan fruit trees.

Beautiful photo Benji. I too would like to know where the "chicken" in Cantonese comes from.
Such a beautiful insect! It's a shame there aren't North American lantern flies, but at least we do get some pretty planthoppers. Auntnance, it is indeed a lantern fly, which are planthoppers in the genera Fulgora and Pyrops.
