Field Notes

Description:

A member of the agave family, it lives for 10 to 30 years (despite the name). Originally from Mexico, but cultivated as an ornamental plant around the world. It can grow very large, sprawling up to 4m outwards, and its flowers can reach heights of 10m. The spines on the tips of the leaves can pierce to the bone. Also called the American aloe due to the superficial similarity, but in a separate family to the aloes.

Habitat:

Dry soil

Notes:

Found in a garden in Bellagio, Northern Italy. Thanks to Dandoucette for the ID on this one!!

Species ID Suggestions

10 to 30 years and gigantic !!! very impressive :O beautiful discovery Laura :)
Haha, whoops, Noe and Pili you commented after I started writing my last comment, but before I could press send! I am looking at Agave salmiana, I think it matches size-wise, but the leaves on A. salmiana look a lot thicker than on A. americana and on the one in my photo. I will keep looking, but I think A. americana is the best fit so far :)
Thanks Misako! It is indeed an agave, Dandoucette pinpointed the species as Agave americana :) It's called the American aloe since it does look so much like one... my limited plant knowledge steered me in the wrong direction haha!
I agree misako.hill, there are a lot of this where I come from
